2009 Shanghai Book Fair is successfully closed on 19th, August. The annual event witnessed more than 40,000 visitors per day. Although the book fair itself is very prosperous, there is a lack of Chinese original writings; instead, many new foreign literature books have drawn the attention. Chinese publishers have fierce competition on the copyrights of foreign bestselling books, mainly because they feel it is straightforward and less risky to publish books already successful on other markets. When China started to open up in 1970s, there were only a few professional translation presses, but now the countrys 500 publishing houses are all eager to translate foreign books, which change the market landscape dramatically. In early 1990s, the lifestyle and management titles were very popular. Since 2000, however, the foreign literature, especially those bestsellers, has become the new fashion. Expert points out there are many potential dangers in terms of this new wave, e.g. the decrease of translation quality, the violation of copyright and the disorder of market competition.
